Certificate of Proficiency

Well today my Certificate of Proficiency in Amateur Radio finally arrived from Industry Canada. I never really think much of these so-called milestones, in particular this one merely because I intend to pass the Advanced exam, and quite likely the Morse Code one too.

All the same, it is nice to be officially licensed. I am still taking at least one practice Advanced exam each day, and my average continues to hover around 80% and shows a continued positive trend.

I have put my worked examples project to the back-burner for a few days since I am gearing up for the festive season. I’ll hopefully get back to it soon – though it seems more a pass-time than a useful endeavour.

OVMRC Course – Week 10

This Week:

*Amplifiers / Oscillators by VE3EJJ
*Transmission Techniques / Modes by VE3SUY

This week Ernie (VE3EJJ) covered a topic which was of great interest to me as a child: amplifiers. When I was young, I used to play with my CB radio, generally interfering with local CBers in Ottawa. I was always looking to get more performance out of my hand-held radio, so one day I found a company offering schematics to build a linear amplifier in the 26-28MHz range which covers the CB band. Of course, amplifying a license exempt band is prohibited, but I was a rebellious kid! I never did end up making the amplifier – the schematics were well beyond my abilities at the time (I was ~10y/o) but it was my first look at the topic.

The second topic of the night was the various modes of radio operation, starting with spark-gap and moving all the way along to a lesser known phase modulation technique. Bob (VE3SUY) gave an extremely helpful lecture which helps in understanding modulation methods such as AM and FM (amplitude and frequency modulation respectively). I was very familiar with the modulation methods as a result of plenty of self-study, however, it would have been a heck of a lot simpler to learn had I hear Bob’s talk sooner! The concept of block diagrams came up again, and it is worth mentioning that there are at least 5 questions in the Basic exam which test your knowledge of transmitter and receiver block diagrams. So it was an informative (theory heavy) night.

Missed it by 2 questions!

Did my usual practice exam today and nearly scored perfect!

I attribute the score to the random chance that I get all of the easiest possible questions from RIC-8 (the Advanced question bank) and fumbled on what should have been simple questions.

The 96% will certainly skew my statistics, however, this is one outlier I am a little proud of.

Progress..

I make a point of trying a practice Advanced exam at least once a day and I log the results using the exam generator software. It seems my score fluctuates between 74% and 80% which is frustrating. I know that it is a pass, but I hope to do better than just pass the exam.

The good news is that my score appears to be trending in the upward direction over the past week. Now if only I could stop making those stupid mistakes! We will be covering transmission lines, etc soon in the OVMRC course so that should give some good perspective on a few questions. Some days it seems that Tuesday can’t come too soon!
